The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), in collaboration with PWILL, is organising an expert workshop on the topic of “Digital Platforms, Gender & Cultural Policy” on Thursday, 28 September 2023 from 09:00 am to 11:00 am.
Starting with the “Star of democratic qualities of digital platforms” (Fuster & Espelt 2019), this workshop delves into a comprehensive research project. The focus is on the impact of cultural policy innovation and digitalisation through a gender lens, centring on the Berlin and Barcelona scenarios. Recognising the pivotal role of policy interventions in directing the blend of cultural innovation, gender perspectives, and digitalisation, this study is set out to critically assess the policy environment in both cities. The chief aim is to determine the effectiveness of these policies in establishing a base for socioeconomic advancement and gender equality.
This workshop, led by Ricard Espelt (researcher from the Open University of Catalonia in residence at HIIG) and Freia Kuper (researcher at HIIG), aims to instigate a profound dialogue amongst Berlin stakeholders concerning the intersections of democratic qualities of digital platforms, gender intricacies, and cultural policy. By examining endeavours from esteemed organisations such as Diversity Arts Culture or Algorithm Watch, and contrasting them with insights from Barcelona, the goal is to pinpoint primary challenges and formulate practical solutions.
